HI! I’m Zoë
NYC-BASED DRUMMER/MUSICIAN/CREATIVE ARTIST
As soon as I could form sentences, I was making songs. First I had an acoustic guitar and when I was 10, I started drumming and it only took one lesson to know I wanted to do it forever.
Music and drumming nurtured me during my years at Trinity School in Manhattan, which was very much like Gossip Girl. Always feeling like an outsider, playing in the jazz bands, talent shows and special events helped bring me out of my shell. I performed with Trinity’s premier jazz band at Lincoln Center.
My love for drumming and music continued at Skidmore College, where I majored in music and graduated cum laude. I immersed myself there in a wide range of musical styles and disciplines. I had a radio show highlighting indie female artists. I formed and performed in numerous bands, and recorded my first solo “EP” called The Feels and Wants and handed CDs of it to people around campus. I studied music history, the physics of sound, classical music, West African drumming, ‘60’s British Rock, and engineering and music production, further honing my craft and developing my unique dynamic and melodic sound.
After college, I moved back to NYC and was embraced by the Brooklyn music scene, where my drumming style flourished, first gaining recognition when I joined the band Total Slacker, which quickly led to meeting and working with a long and diverse roster of artists. I've toured extensively, nationally and internationally, and played major venues like Terminal 5, opening for Bikini Kill, Brooklyn Steel, opening for Mitski, and music festivals like Lollapalooza.
I’ve performed two NPR Tiny Desk Concerts (with Kalbells and Sad13) and also played two KEXP sessions (with Sasami and Bachelor). I’ve also worked with Mark Ronson, Benson Boone, Paloma Faith, SAMMUS, Oberhofer, King Tuff, Palehound, and more.
Tom Tom Magazine wrote about me, which led me to create a feature for it called "Show Us Your Kits,” where I interviewed female/non-binary drummers about their gear. I profiled Linda-Philomène Tsoungui, who now plays with The Mars Volta, and Giulliana Merello, who plays for Karol G.
I have had multiple TV appearances on shows like The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, and CBS Saturday Morning.
A standout achievement was guest drumming for a week with the 8G Band on Late Night with Seth Meyers in 2023.
The biggest highlight in my career so far was when I started working with Bruce Springsteen in 2022, drumming in several music videos and performing with him and an 18-piece orchestra for a week-long takeover on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon in support of his most recent album Only the Strong Survive. On the takeover's last day, The Roots joined us and I double drummed with Questlove.
In addition to live performance, I also do session work. I’ve played drums/percussion on acclaimed albums like Haunted Painting by Sad13, which was ranked one of Rolling Stone magazine’s top albums of 2020; Palehound’s Eye On The Bat (“The Clutch” and “Independence Day”); Cassandra Jenkins’ My Light, My Destroyer (“Petco”); Total Slacker’s Slip Away; and Julien Baker & Torres’ Send a Prayer My Way.
I am a multi-instrumentalist and have a solo project called HUSHPUPPY, where I write, perform, produce and engineer all of the music. My most recently released song, “Nervous,” was featured in Hardly Art's 15th Anniversary Singles Series.
In 2023 I was honored alongside Samara Joy by Mount Sinai Hospital’s annual Wonderful World Gala, which benefits the Louis Armstrong Center for Music and Medicine. I also performed off-Broadway in the world premiere of Colette Robert's play, The Cotillion, with music by Dionne McClain-Freeney.
I am endorsed by Ludwig Drums.
